Fair Trade in Year 3

On Wednesday 16th January, as part of their immersion, the Y3 children had the opportunity to experience the life of Brazilian coffee farmers. The children were expected to pick, wash, dry, grind, pack and label coffee beans ready to be sold to the ‘Uk’. It was hard work and not as fun as first expected! Once their hard work had been completed, the children demanded a payment of £4.35 for their duties, as this is the National minimum wage for anyone under the age of 18. But, to their disappointment, they only received a mere 2p, for their efforts. The differences in pay and working conditions in different countries came as a shock to the pupils and generated excellent discussion through our Philosophy sessions. Year 3 are now ready
